MODEL CODE AGENCY

The public's health and safety are paramount

Uniform ES is part of the IAPMO Group, a nonprofit corporation that is registered under IRS Section 501(c) 6 as a nonprofit business league. The International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO), among other notable activities, is the promulgator of the Uniform Plumbing Code and Uniform Mechanical Code.  The IAPMO and IAPMO Uniform ES governing bodies consist of public officials (Building Officials, Plumbing Officials, etc.). This oversight assures that all of the activities of UES are undertaken with the public’s interest and safety paramount. UES is not swayed by the need to achieve quarterly profits. There is no other factor as important to the success of UES as supporting public safety.

This can be a significant factor when considering the pressures and priorities that naturally occur within the corporate world. The influence from share-holders and upper management on the rest of the company to reach quarterly profit goals cannot be easily quantified. This can be especially problematic when all facets of a product review are within one corporate umbrella: testing, quality control documentation, initial audits, on-going inspections, and the evaluation report itself.

There may also be unforeseen issues when a for-profit-corporation is foreign based. Uniform ES and its parent IAPMO are based here in the United States and are very familiar with the codes that are referenced in the Evaluation Reports.

As a model code agency IAPMO goes way beyond the minimal requirements of ISO/IEC 17065.  Some of their many functions include writing the codes, conducting education and training classes, advocating for and supporting research to benefit public health and safety, and supporting governmental jurisdictions. All of these activities are with the interests of the public's health and safety at the forefront.
